# Roof Damage in Houston: What To Do First
Roof damage in Houston after a storm? This page is written in the order things actually need doing — the first hour, the first day, then the claim. GAF Golden Pledge with Timberline UHDZ
Not an upgrade we sell you. What we register, as standard, on every approved claim.
- **Class 4 impact resistance.** UHDZ carries a UL 2218 Class 4 rating, the highest of the four classes — so the replacement is built for what took the last one.
- **30 years of workmanship, backed by GAF.** Non-prorated, and covered by the manufacturer rather than resting on whether a contractor is still trading. Silver Pledge, by comparison, carries 10.
- **50-year non-prorated protection period.** The window in which coverage is not reduced by age.
- **No wind speed cap.** WindProven carries no maximum wind speed limitation on LayerLock-labelled shingles — the number worth having on the Gulf Coast.
- **Ventilation corrected and pivot pipe boots fitted** on every claim replacement, whether or not the scope asks for them.
**Why most contractors cannot offer this.** Golden Pledge requires a GAF Master Elite contractor — roughly 2% of US roofers — installing five qualifying accessory products as a system. Terms are GAF’s and subject to their published limitations. Class 4 applies to UHDZ shingles bearing the UltraMat logo and UL 2218 classification; the test is performed under controlled laboratory conditions and GAF makes no warranty about performance against hail, which is not covered by the limited warranty. The Texas Department of Insurance states that a Class 4 roof covering receives the highest premium credit of the four classes; the amount is set by each insurer, not by the state, and is never applied automatically. Typical response **2 to 4 hours**, any day of the year. Tarping and emergency measures come first — every hour water is entering makes the interior damage worse and the claim more complicated.
2. 2 ### Full inspection, documented slope by slope

### Where we stop
**We are roofers, not public adjusters.** We do not file insurance claims, negotiate settlements, or represent you to your insurer — in Texas that work is reserved to licensed public adjusters, and a roofer offering to do it is offering something they are not licensed for.
What we do is produce documentation good enough that the claim is judged on what is actually on your roof. That is the part we control, and it is the part that matters.
Paying the deductible
## Claim Approved, Deductible in the Way?
The most common reason an approved roof insurance claim stalls. The insurer has agreed to pay, the roof needs doing, and the deductible — often $2,000 to $5,000, or a percentage of your dwelling coverage — is not sitting in the account this month.
It can be financed like any other roofing cost, which lets the work start while the claim proceeds. Three plans, with the real terms:
- **Wells Fargo — 18 months same as cash.** Clear the balance inside 18 months and you pay no interest. If any of it is still outstanding at 18 months, interest at **28.99%** is charged back to the first day. This is deferred interest, not 0% APR, and the difference matters.
- **Wells Fargo — fixed rate.** 8.99% APR over 70 months, no deferred interest and no cliff.
- **Service Finance, a Truist company.** 9.99% over 120 or 180 months, or six months of no payments followed by 120.
All financing is through the Wells Fargo Home Projects credit card issued by Wells Fargo Bank, N.A. or through Service Finance Company, and all of it is **subject to credit approval**. Terms are set by the lender and can change.
**To be clear about what this is.** Texas law prohibits a roofing contractor from paying, waiving, absorbing or rebating a homeowner’s insurance deductible. Any contractor offering to “cover your deductible” or “work with whatever insurance pays” is proposing something illegal, and it puts your claim at risk as well as theirs.
Financing is different: you pay your deductible in full, over time rather than at once. That is an ordinary consumer credit arrangement.

### Bank lenders, not a broker
We work with **Wells Fargo Bank, N.A.** and **Service Finance Company**, a Truist company. Both are banks, so your application goes to one lender rather than being passed between several.
Some contractor financing is run by technology companies rather than lenders — their own disclosures say so. Worth asking who is on your paperwork.
How fast can you get here?
Typically **2 to 4 hours**, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. After a major storm that stretches — when thousands of roofs are damaged at once, everybody’s does.
We prioritize active water intrusion. If it is raining into your house, say so when you call.
My roof looks fine. Could it still be damaged?
Frequently, yes. Wind can break a shingle’s seal strip without moving it, and impact damage bruises rather than punctures — so a roof hit in April can look untouched from the driveway and start leaking in October.

Should I file an insurance claim?
Not always. If the damage is close to your deductible, filing may cost you more in premium and claims history than it returns.
We will inspect and tell you honestly what we find, including when our answer is that you probably do not have a claim worth filing. A contractor who encourages every homeowner to file is not looking after your interests.
Do you handle the claim for me?
No. Filing, negotiating and settling a claim is the work of a **licensed public adjuster**, and in Texas a roofer cannot do it. Anyone who offers to is offering something they are not licensed for.

What if the insurer’s payment does not cover the work?
Common, and it has a name — a **supplement**. Adjusters work from one visit and a standard pricing database, so decking, code upgrades and flashing quantities are often missed.
We document the gap so you can submit it. What we will not do is quietly cut scope to fit the check — that is how a roof ends up without its leak barrier.
I have 3-tab shingles. What do I get?
A **Class 3 impact-resistant shingle** — a substantial step up from 3-tab, which carries no meaningful impact rating. Homes that had architectural shingles get **Class 4** Timberline UHDZ.
Either way, nobody gets put back on the shingle that just failed. We also upgrade the **ventilation** on every replacement — fitting O’Hagin low-profile intake vents where a house has no soffit venting or the insulation is blocking it — and fit **GAF Master Flow pivot pipe boots**, since pipe penetrations are among the most common places a roof starts leaking.
Why UHDZ rather than another Class 4 shingle?
There are two ways a shingle reaches Class 4. One blends a polymer into the asphalt — **SBS-modified** — so it stays pliable and deforms under impact instead of cracking. The other reinforces the shingle’s core with a heavier fiberglass mat, which is how UHDZ does it.
Both earn the rating. But in our experience on Houston roofs, SBS-modified shingles are more prone to **blistering** in sustained heat, and we stopped installing them for that reason. UltraMat gets the same Class 4 rating without a pliable asphalt layer to blister when an attic runs at 140°F.
Which warranty do I get on an insurance job?
**GAF Golden Pledge with Timberline UHDZ** — lifetime shingle coverage, a 50-year non-prorated protection period, and **30 years of non-prorated workmanship coverage backed by GAF**, not just by us.
Golden Pledge can only be registered by a GAF Master Elite contractor installing five qualifying accessory products. Ask any contractor bidding your claim which pledge they register.
UHDZ also carries a **UL 2218 Class 4** impact rating — the highest of the four classes — which matters when most Houston claims are hail claims. It also attracts the highest insurance credit of the four classes, though how much is set by your carrier rather than the state. What UL 2218 and the Texas discount actually mean.
What does wind damage to a roof actually look like?
Wind does not lift a roof evenly. It fails at the **edges** — the ridge cap, the rake and the starter strip along the eaves, which are the three courses most often cut short or under-nailed on installation.
From the ground, look for shingles standing proud of the course below, a ridge line that is no longer straight, granule piles at the downspouts, and shingles in the yard or the flower beds. A shingle that lifted and laid back down has broken its seal strip even though it looks fine, and it will lift again in the next storm.
Will insurance cover wind damage if the roof is old?
Often yes, but how much depends on your policy. Many Texas policies pay **actual cash value** on an older roof rather than replacement cost, which means depreciation comes off the settlement. Some carriers apply a roof-payment schedule that reduces the payout by the roof’s age regardless.
Age is not by itself a reason not to file — wind damage is wind damage. It is a reason to know which basis your policy uses before you call, which is on the claims page.

Went on Angi's List to find a roofers to fix leaks coming into home. Had several come out but JC&C put a temporary fix on during a rainy spell. They were our third, but we went wirh them immediately. I want to share my experience with JC&C roofing. As you know, after the last hurricane Beryl, with all the damage to the roofs, it has been almost impossible to find anybody to come and fix things. I called the people who roofed my house and they said that they could not come and would not know when they would. Walking down my neighborhood on Thursday, I saw a truck of JC&C working on a roof. I came to talk to them and told them that I had a relatively small job in my house (the cap of an exhaust pipe had been blown up during the hurricane). He said that is was dangerous to fix it then because it was raining, but that they would come as soon as possible. Well, that meant two days later and now my roof is fixed! Thank you Mr. Paniagua!

On a visit to my elderly parents who live in Sugarland, I live in Austin, I found that a filled rain gutter had been flowing in the wrong direction and caused the end piece of the roof eave and soffit to rot. Being remote, I had to get onto Yelp and try to find a company that could rebuild the soffit, fix bad flashing, and put in a new gutter. This led me to JC&C and they did a fantastic job. In addition, they have online pictures (where I got these that I'm posting) of the inspection, during the construction, and the completed project. These pictures assured me of the quality of their work, from my remote home. And although they don't do gutters, part of their bid included gutter replacement which they subcontracted out and I didn't have to go searching for a gutter company. Very pleased with JC&C.

ROOF REPLACEMENT & SUBSEQUENT ROOF TUNE-UPDecember 2022This is a follow-up review from our 2019 roof installation. I called Christian at JC&C Roofing to perform a tune-up and inspection on our existing roof system. His two-man team were proficient in their work. The team was on-time and performed what I consider to be a very thorough inspection and tune-up of our roof system. The tune-up included the following: 1) Caulking all areas at flashings and other areas where water intrusion could possibly pose a problem.2) Checked for nail pops on the shingles.3) Inspected all areas of the roof including turbines and ridge vents.4) Painted all roof jacks to further enhance the roof appearance.They performed a complete power wash of our driveway including our sidewalk in front of the house which made a considerable difference in the overall appearance of the lot and home aesthetics. Christian would not accept any payment for this three (3) hour service which I found remarkable in these times.Once again Christian and his roofing team exceeded our expectations in the performance of their work. Christian, Jennifer and the JC&C Roofing team go above and beyond to make sure their work exceeds the norm. I highly recommend this roofing company to any consumer or business looking for exceptional roof work by a business who maintains a high level of integrity.October 2019After performing extensive research I determined the best possible replacement roof system for our 15 year old roof was a GAF roof system and the best roof Contractor to be JC&C Roofing Company.We selected the following materials for our new roof system: Timberline Ultra HD shingles and Deck Armor UV-stabilized polypropylene on top of decking (under the shingles). This synthetic material is breathable and reduces moisture from being trapped within the roofing system thereby averting mold issues; Storm Guard Ice & Water shield for valleys and penetrations, Pro-start starter shingles to provide optimal wind resistance at the eaves, and Cobra 3 - 12" ridge vents in conjunction with the Lomanco 14" Whirlybird turbines for optimal attic ventilation. I proceeded with calling a few selected contractors, interviewing each personally, and obtaining a quotation for the work which included the GAF - Gold Pledge protection warranty which provides a (25) year non-prorated / no roof leak (workmanship) guarantee with a 50 year warranty on shingles. Christian took considerable time to explain the complete process of preparation, installation and completion of the roof system. Additionally, he provided a checklist which addressed each item to be installed in our roof system. He even came at 8:00 PM the night before the job to insure all materials had been delivered as per our Agreement. JC&C crew members worked like a well tuned machine. It was truly remarkable to watch them function with each man working as an integral part of the team. After the old roof was extracted they began work on the decking to prepare for the new roof. Old rotted decking was removed and replaced. He removed the old roof turbines and relocated new whirlybird turbines to a higher roof point to allow for optimal attic heat extraction.The work was completed in a fluid and professional manner with exacting precision.Upon completion of the roof replacement Christian sent his supervisor to perform some punch-out and do a high pressure wash of the driveway and patio areas including the street in front of our driveway where roof granules had accumulated. He left our property looking much better than before his arrival to perform the work. We now have a beautiful new GAF Ultra HD roof which enhances the asthetics of our home. In my opinion JC&C Roofing is the best contractor for your roofing needs. I do not believe you will find a more friendly, capable and honest contractor than Christian at JC&C Roofing.Thanks Christian to you, Jennifer and crew. After a little bumpy start when the first group of roofers looked at the job and decided the roof pitch was too steep and drove off. That delayed the start by a couple of days but once the next group of 9 roofers started they were awesome. They worked for 2 & 1/2 days over 10 hours a day and along with the companyâ s owner direct involvement the job was extremely well done, right down to the clean-up. I have already recommended JC&C to several of my neighbors and will to anyone else requiring roofing services.

I don't have enough words to express what an amazing experience we had with JC&C roofing. We had a horrible experience a few years back where we had our money stolen by roofers. I was being overly cautious this time before we choose a company after our last horrible experience. JC&C was patient and available to answer all of the many questions we had. The day before they were supposed to start on my roof I spoke to Christian. He expressed he was concerned because of my roof's condition and we were supposed to be getting a bad storm. He said I want to send someone out free of charge to cover your roof and make sure you don't get interior damage. That's showing absolute professionalism and amazing value for your customers. The day of the job they put boards around my house to protect my windows. They covered all the property with tarps. They used metal magnetic rollers all over the property before they left to make sure all nails were picked up from the ground. Christian communicated multiple times sharing what the job status of the roof was. The next day after my roof was completed he sent someone that power washed all my property to clean off the dust and dirt from the roof job. I can't say enough kind words about JC&C roofing and now we have one of the best well made roofs in the neighborhood!

The service is just perfect from everyone in this company. You are never on hold when you call. The ladies that dispatch the calls are courteous and efficient. The appointments are easy to make and always kept. We had our roof entirely re-done by them. They came on time, and completed the roof on time. Maintenance is absolutely the best. We had a minor leakage after a storm and the repair technician came the next day and fixed it right away. He inspected the entire roof to make sure that everything was in order. Very knowledgeable very professional. I recommended them to several people.

Let me tell you all of the reasons that JC&C Roofing is the way to go for the most important investment you will put on your house. 1 - Product Knowledge. Christian, the owner, came out to provide a quote. He took some measurements and then scheduled a time to come back and deliver his proposal. This allowed him time to compile all of the data and figures to ensure that the quote given is the final price without any hidden expenses. They have several products the offer and will provide detailed quotes and a plethora of information about everything they sell. 2 - Production. Once we decided on the product package we wanted, which was the Diamond Package (thank God for financing). Christian had a crew swarm on our house the very next day. The worked so hard and got 99% of the job done on the first day. The next morning they were back out to finish the last minute touches. The owner was onsite for most of the project, checking in that I was happy with the work and always asking if I had any questions or concerns. 3 - Service. I can't rave enough about Christian. So rare is it to find someone that is polite, kind, funny, honest, and just an overall good person. Christian is good people. Plain and simple. I honestly feel like he treated us like he would want to be treated and I have a great amount of respect for his customer service, dedication to his craft, and earning the respect of those around him. I am confident that if I should have any issues in the near future with this new amazing looking roof, that he would be back out in a hot second to take care of me. Great Product. Great Company. We decided to go with JC&C Roofing which was the best decision we could have made. While sometimes it took a little longer to hear back from Christian, the workers were on time. Fixed all the issues and gave us a brand new roof that is so gorgeous I believe my neighbors are jealous. Christian also added attic vents and took down old satalite dishes at no charge. The kicker was he also had someone come by and pressure wash the house and drive way with no extra charge. Christian stated any problems just to contact him. Add to it he also dealt with our insurance company so we did not have to. I could not ask for a better individual or company to have work on my home!

I discovered several shingles in my backyard after some recent heavy storms in our area and I was concerned for the integrity of our roof. I scheduled an appointment for a roof inspection through JC&C's website and received two emails confirming the appointment. Abraham Barrera performed the inspection, was prompt, courteous, and thorough. He called 45 minutes before arrival, took a number of photos of our roof so we would have proof of any issues, and also inspected an exhaust pipe for our water heater that we had some concerns about. It turned out that the shingles I found in our yard were actually from the neighbor's roof and our roof was fine. Abraham sent us the photos he took even though no work needed to be done and the INSPECTION WAS FREE. I told him I would let our neighbors know about their roof and Abraham gave us a business card to pass along. I don't know how expensive (or not) their repair costs are, but I would definitely hire them to work on our roof in the future.

We had a major hail storm come through our area and the damage was so extensive that our roof needed to be replaced completely and the house needed a lot of cosmetic repair. When you have major work like this that needs to be done, it's never fun to hassle with insurance claims etc. and the business responsible for fixing the damage. My experience with Christian and the men who worked on my house was exceptional. I can truly say that the process was so much smoother on their end than I could have possibly anticipated. I was very impressed with the communication and responsiveness of Christian. He stopped by numerous times to check on the progress and to update me. They can and looked at the roof and made repairs to a broken vent. They did not do the actual tune up that I had purchased on Angie's list though. This was a bit disappointing. It seems like they got to the repairs I needed and forgot to do the tune up part. I know this because during my home inspection, they noticed several loose shingles. Adhesive of loose shingles was a big part of the tune up package 🙁
