A Hurricane Is Not Just a Very Bad Windstorm
Houston gets windstorms every year and most roofs survive them. A hurricane fails roofs that handled forty windstorms, and the reason is not only the wind speed. It is the duration.
A thunderstorm tests your roof for twenty minutes. A hurricane tests it for 24 to 48 hours, from constantly shifting directions, while forcing five to twenty inches of rain at every seam. Anything marginal fails eventually, because eventually is a long time in a hurricane.

Prolonged exposure
A seal that holds for an hour may not hold for thirty. Duration is what separates a hurricane from a storm, and it is the factor least reflected in a wind rating.
Swirling, not straight-line
Wind arriving from shifting directions creates uplift on parts of the roof that never see it in a normal storm — and it works fasteners loose rather than simply pushing on them.
Debris as projectiles
Patio furniture, trampolines and limbs. In Houston the trampoline is not a joke — it is one of the most common sources of roof puncture damage after a named storm.
Water finding everything
Wind-driven rain forces water uphill and sideways under shingles that are still attached. Twenty inches of it, over two days, finds every marginal detail on the roof.
What Each Category Does to a Houston Roof

Maintenance decides it. A well-maintained roof usually walks away. A neglected one often does not.

Beyond most architectural ratings. Architectural shingles are rated 110–130 mph.
Most hurricanes reaching Houston are Category 1 to 3. Which sounds reassuring until you notice that a Category 1 will still take a roof apart if the maintenance has been neglected — and that is the version most homeowners experience.

Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30. Everything useful happens at one of three points, and only one of them is before the storm.

The only point at which anything can actually be fixed. Everything after this is damage limitation.
- Shingle condition — loose, cracked or missing, and how much granule is left
- Flashing integrity at chimneys, vents and valleys, which is where wind-driven rain gets in
- Decking and structure — soft spots, previous water damage
- Drainage — gutters and downspouts clear and secured, because 20 inches of rain has to go somewhere
- Fastening — whether the roof is actually attached the way it should be
Book it in early spring. By June every roofer in Houston is booked, and by the time a storm is named it is far too late to schedule work.

What you can still do
Not much on the roof itself — and nobody should be up a ladder with a storm coming. But the ground work matters more than people think.
- Secure everything loose — patio furniture, planters, trampolines, grills. These become the debris that punctures roofs
- Trim what you safely can, or at least remove obviously dead limbs over the house
- Clear the gutters if they can be reached safely from a properly set ladder
- Photograph the roof and the house from every side — dated, before the storm. This is the single most valuable thing on this list
- Find your policy, note your deductible, and check whether it is the named-storm one
Those before photographs matter enormously. Establishing what the roof looked like the day before the storm removes most pre-existing-damage arguments later.

Assessment and documentation
From the ground first. Binoculars, not a ladder — wet debris-covered roofs after a hurricane are how people get hurt in the days after a storm.
- Photograph everything before anything is moved or cleaned up
- Check the attic for daylight, wet insulation and staining on the decking
- Photograph interior damage and date it, however small
- Report to your insurer promptly — your policy requires it as a duty, not a courtesy
- Get it tarped if water is coming in. Mitigation is also a policy duty

What that means practically. No roofing system is immune to a hurricane, and anyone claiming otherwise is selling. What WindProven™ removes is the argument — there is no wind speed at which GAF can say the storm was simply too strong for the warranty to apply. On the Gulf Coast that is the number worth having.

Material is the one factor you choose. Two ratings matter and they measure different things — a roof can be strong on one and ordinary on the other.

On the insurance discount
You will see percentages quoted widely for Class 4 roofs. We do not publish one, because there is no state-set figure.
What the Texas Department of Insurance actually says is that impact-resistant materials may be eligible for a discount, that Class 4 receives the highest premium credit of the four classes, and that the amount is established by the insurance company on a company-by-company basis.

Frequently Asked Questions
When should I schedule a pre-hurricane roof inspection?
March or April. Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, and spring is the only window where problems can still be fixed unhurried. By June the schedule is full, and once a storm is named nothing can be booked at all.
What is the difference between wind-resistant and impact-resistant roofing?
Wind resistance is about the shingle staying attached — measured in mph. 3-tab is rated 60 to 70, architectural 110 to 130. Impact resistance is about surviving something hitting it, measured by UL 2218 Class 1 to 4. A roof can be excellent at one and ordinary at the other.
Do impact-resistant shingles lower my insurance premium in Texas?
They may. The Texas Department of Insurance states that impact-resistant materials may be eligible for a discount, that Class 4 receives the highest premium credit of the four classes, and that the amount is set by each insurance company individually. Can I reinforce my existing roof rather than replacing it?
To a degree. Loose flashing can be resecured, failed seals renewed, vents replaced with metal, and ventilation corrected. What cannot be retrofitted is the shingle's wind rating. If you have 3-tab shingles rated to 60 to 70 mph, no amount of preparation raises that number — only replacement does.
A hurricane is forecast and I have not prepared. What now?
Focus on the ground, not the roof. Secure everything loose — furniture, trampolines, planters — because that is what punctures roofs. Photograph the house from every side, dated. Find your policy and check whether your deductible is the named-storm one. Do not get on the roof.
What is my hurricane deductible likely to be?
Most Texas policies carry three separate deductibles. The hurricane or named-storm one is commonly 2% but can be 5% or 10% on Gulf Coast policies — and it is a percentage of your dwelling coverage, not the claim. Is any roof actually hurricane-proof?
No roofing system is immune to a hurricane, and anyone claiming otherwise is selling. But there is one thing that comes close on the warranty side.
