Attic Ventilation in Houston
A 90°F Houston afternoon is a 140°F attic if the ventilation is wrong. That heat cooks your shingles from underneath, drives your electricity bill up, and makes your air conditioning work for something it can never win.
It is the most overlooked line on a roofing quote, and the one that decides how long the roof lasts.
Ventilation is a system, not a vent. Air has to come in before it can go out. Exhaust with no intake does not ventilate anything — it just puts holes in your roof.

He Replaced His Air Conditioner Twice. The Problem Was on the Roof.
Eight years of the wrong fix
- Two air conditioning units in eight years. The house would not cool and the electricity bill kept climbing.
- The second unit was bigger. The obvious answer — if it will not cool, buy more cooling. It did not work either.
- Nobody looked at the roof. Why would they? It was not leaking.
Two units, eight years of high bills, and a house that was still uncomfortable.
What the inspection found
- Two louver vents. That was the entire exhaust. On a whole house.
- The intake was completely blocked by insulation. Not partially. Blocked.
So the attic had two small holes to push air out of, and no way at all for air to come in. Which means nothing moved. The attic simply heated up all day and sat there, radiating into the rooms below, while an increasingly large air conditioner fought it and lost.

Closed the two louver vents
This surprises people. But competing exhaust points work against each other — a ridge vent will pull air from the nearest opening rather than from the eaves, short-circuiting the whole system. Two louvers plus a ridge vent is worse than a ridge vent alone.

Installed O'Hagin intake vents low on the roof
The soffits could not be used — insulation had them sealed and there was no practical way to clear them. O'Hagin vents are deck-mounted, which means intake without needing a soffit at all. Each one delivers 72 square inches of net free ventilating area.

Ran GAF Cobra Rigid Vent 3 along the ridge
The 11.5″ width, sized for 12″ ridge cap shingles. 18 square inches of net free area per linear foot, external baffles to deflect wind-driven rain, and rated to 110 mph in GAF's own testing.

Inside temperature. Same house, same air conditioner, same thermostat setting. The only thing that changed was that air could finally move through the attic — and the air conditioning system started working properly for the first time in eight years.
There is still room to improve this roof. An AtticBreeze solar fan would move more air again, and we recommended it. The homeowner had exactly enough credit approved for the roof and the ventilation system, and not for the fan. We fitted what the budget covered and told him what was left on the table — which is the honest way round.
The point of this story is not that ventilation is magic. It is that two air conditioners were bought to solve a problem that was never in the air conditioning. Nobody checked the roof, because the roof was not leaking — and a roof that is not leaking is assumed to be fine.

Air Has to Come In Before It Can Go Out
Every ventilation problem we find is a version of the same thing: plenty of exhaust, not enough intake, or the two fighting each other.
Half one · low on the roof
Intake
Cool air enters at the eaves, or through deck-mounted vents low on the slope. This is the half that gets forgotten, and the half that is usually blocked.

Hot air rises and leaves at the highest point. This is the half everybody has, because it is the half you can see from the street.

Exhaust without intake is decoration. A ridge vent on a house with blocked soffits does not ventilate anything — and worse, it will pull air from wherever it can find it, which usually means from inside the house through ceiling gaps, dragging conditioned air into the attic.
The code figure: 1 square foot of ventilation per 300 square feet of attic floor, split roughly evenly between intake and exhaust. Without a vapour barrier it becomes 1:150.
What We Fit, and What We Will Not
Intake
O'Hagin low-profile vents
72 sq in NFVA per vent
Deck-mounted and tapered, so they sit almost flush and disappear into the roof surface. The critical part: they need no soffit. On a house where the intake is blocked by insulation, or where there is no overhang to work with, they are frequently the only way to get intake at all.
One-piece, no separate subflashing. Fitted low on the slope, in the lower third of the attic.
Exhaust
GAF Cobra Rigid Vent 3, 11.5″
18 sq in per linear foot
The 11.5″ width, sized for 12″ ridge cap shingles. It is also made in 9″, and we do not use it — the narrower profile moves less air for the same run of ridge, and once it is installed nobody is going back to change it.
External baffles deflect wind-driven rain. Rated to 110 mph in GAF's testing, and it is a qualifying accessory for the GAF system warranties.
And the two things we decline
Plastic turtle vents
They go brittle in Houston UV, crack, and then leak. We fit metal — it costs more and it is still there in fifteen years.
The 9″ ridge vent
Cheaper per foot, less net free area. On a Gulf Coast attic that difference matters, so we only fit the 11.5″.
When passive is not enough
AtticBreeze solar fans
Some roofs cannot get enough passive movement — complex layouts, short ridge runs, or attics too large for the ridge length available. A solar-powered fan adds active exhaust with no wiring and nothing on your electricity bill.
We recommend it where it helps and say so where it does not. On a roof with a long ridge and clear intake, a fan adds cost without adding much air.

Half the Price While the Roof Is Open
Ventilation is part of the roof system, not an add-on. Which is why the moment to fix it is while the roof is already off.
During a roof replacement

The deck is already exposed, the shingles are already off, and the vent goes in as part of the installation.

Retrofitted afterwards

Cutting into a finished roof, matching the existing system, and reflashing each penetration properly.
Worth every dollar on a house that needs it. Just cheaper the other way round.
Final pricing depends on complexity and the roof system we are matching. A simple gable roof and a cut-up hip roof with three planes are not the same job. We quote the real number after looking at it, and the inspection is free.

How hot does a Houston attic get?

Why is my house hot even with a new air conditioner?
Frequently because the problem is not the air conditioner. If the attic above it is at 140°F and that heat is radiating down through the ceiling, a bigger unit just loses the same fight more expensively. We inspected a house in Friendswood where the owner had replaced the A/C twice in eight years — the actual problem was two louver vents and an intake completely blocked by insulation.

Does ventilation affect my roof warranty?
It can. Manufacturers specify balanced ventilation as a condition of coverage, and GAF ridge vent is one of the qualifying accessories for the enhanced GAF system warranties — including WindProven™, which carries no maximum wind speed limitation. Inadequate ventilation is a recognised reason for a warranty claim to be declined.
