Are Your Gutters Big Enough for Your Roof?
Gutter size is set by the roof area draining into it, not by the size of the house. Plenty of Houston homes have 5-inch gutters on a roof that needs 6 — which is why they overflow in a real downpour no matter how clean they are.

Why Houston is different
Gutter sizing charts are usually written for average rainfall. Houston does not get average rainfall — it gets a month's worth in an afternoon, several times a year.
A gutter sized for steady rain handles a Gulf Coast downpour by overflowing, and it overflows behind the gutter, onto the fascia and down inside the wall. That is the damage, not the puddle on the path.
Which is why we size on roof area and pitch rather than on what was there before. If the previous gutters were undersized, replacing them like for like just buys you the same problem again.
Gutter guards
What a Screen Should Cost
Gutter guards are where this trade does its worst pricing. The spread between products that perform similarly is enormous, so here are real numbers. Houston's gutter installation services.
What we install
Premium micromesh
$15/linear ft
Our screen outperforms the GutterGlove micromesh system in our own installations — finer filtration, and it holds its shape rather than sagging into the trough over time.
Covered by the same 24-month workmanship warranty as the gutters.
Entry level
Standard mesh
From $7.99/linear ft
Keeps leaves and larger debris out. Under heavy pine canopy, needles will still work through a standard mesh — which is why we will tell you when the premium screen is worth the difference and when it is not.
Fine for oak and general leaf litter. Not the right answer under pines.
For comparison
LeafGuard
~$35/linear ft
We do not install it and we cannot — it is sold and fitted only through their own distributors. That is their business model, not a judgment on the product.
At roughly double our premium screen, it is worth getting both quotes before deciding.
Two things nobody tells you about guards
No guard makes a gutter maintenance-free. Anyone claiming otherwise is selling. Fine debris, shingle grit and pollen still collect on top of a screen, and under pine canopy the mat that forms on the mesh has to come off. A guard turns a quarterly job into an annual one; it does not eliminate it.
Some systems make servicing harder or impossible. Full-cover systems like Gutter Helmet are fixed to the roof edge, and a gutter under one cannot be cleaned in the ordinary way. Before buying any guard, ask who can service it afterward and what that costs.
How we quote
No Pressure. Just Numbers.
Gutter guards are one of the most aggressively sold products in home improvement. If you have sat through one of those appointments you already know the pattern. Here is ours, so you know what to expect before you call.
What you may have experienced elsewhere
- A two-hour in-home presentation before anyone mentions a price
- A price that drops when you say no — sometimes twice
- "This price is only good today"
- A call to a manager to "get approval" for a discount
- A total, never a rate — so you cannot compare it to anything
- Pressure to sign before the salesperson leaves
None of that is illegal. It is designed to stop you getting a second quote, because a second quote is what the price cannot survive.
What happens with us
- We measure and give you a rate per linear foot — the same numbers published on this page
- The price is the price. It does not fall because you hesitate, and it is not higher because you did not
- No expiry. Estimates hold 30 days, and we re-issue rather than restart
- Nobody phones a manager. The person quoting is the person accountable
- Take it to two other companies. We would rather you did — published rates are easy to check
- Nothing to sign on the day
If a quote only makes sense when you cannot compare it, it was never a good quote.
Materials
What to Make Them From
Aluminum covers almost every Houston home. The others exist for specific reasons, and one of them we will not install. Houston's gutter installation company.
What we install
Aluminum
25–30 years
Will not rust, light enough to hang without heavy bracketry, holds paint, and can be formed seamlessly on site. Baked-on finishes in a range of colors.
The right answer for the overwhelming majority of Houston homes.
Premium
Copper
50+ years
Genuinely lasts a lifetime and develops a patina many people buy it for. Expensive, and the price moves with the copper market.
Period and architectural homes, where the look is the point.
Situational
Galvanized steel
15–20 years
Stronger than aluminum and better under falling branches. But it rusts eventually, and Houston humidity brings that forward.
Worth considering under heavy tree cover, not otherwise.
We do not install
Vinyl / PVC
5–10 years
Cheap, and it fails here. Texas UV makes vinyl brittle, the sections crack at the joints, and it sags between hangers once it has been through a few summers.
We will not fit it. Replacing it twice costs more than doing it once in aluminum.
The installation
Five Steps, Usually One Day
-
1
Measure and quote
Every run measured, roof area calculated for sizing, downspout positions planned around where water actually needs to go. You get a rate per linear foot and a total, in writing.
-
2
Formed on your driveway
Aluminum coil runs through the forming machine on site and comes out as one continuous length per run — cut to your measurement, not to a stock size.
The mistake to avoid: sectional gutters joined every ten feet. Every joint is a future leak, and they are why most gutters start dripping at the corners.
-
3
Hung to a tested fall
Roughly a quarter-inch of drop every ten feet, toward the downspout. Hidden hangers screwed into the fascia every two feet — not spiked through the front lip.
The mistake to avoid: hanging level. A level gutter holds standing water, which grows things and pulls the run away from the fascia under the weight.
-
4
Downspouts and discharge
3″×4″ on every job, positioned so water leaves the house rather than collecting beside the slab. Extensions where the discharge point needs moving.
The mistake to avoid: too few downspouts on a long run. Even a correctly sized gutter overflows if the water has nowhere to go.
-
5
Water tested, then cleaned up
We run water through the finished system and watch it drain before we leave. Old gutters taken away, magnet sweep for screws, site left clean.
24-month workmanship warranty on gutters and screens. If something we installed leaks or pulls loose in that time, we come back.
Common questions
Gutter Installation Questions
Do I need new gutters, or just a clean?
Replace if seams have separated, sections sag between hangers, there is rust through the metal, the run has pulled away from the fascia, or the gutters are simply too small for the roof.
A tune-up is enough if they are blocked, dripping at a joint, or a bracket has worked loose. That is $149 rather than a replacement, and we will tell you which you have before quoting either.
What does gutter installation cost?
$9.99 per linear foot for 5″ seamless aluminum, $13 for 6″. Screens run $7.99 for standard mesh to $15 for our premium micromesh. Commercial starts at $17.99.
Those are rates, not totals, so you can check them against anyone else's quote. A 150-foot house in 6″ is roughly $1,950 before screens.
What size do I need?
It depends on the roof area draining into each run, not the size of the house. 5″ handles up to about 1,200 sq ft; 6″ up to about 2,500.
Plenty of Houston homes are on 5″ gutters that were never sized for the roof above them, which is why they overflow in heavy rain no matter how clean they are. We size on the roof, not on what was there before.
Why 3″×4″ downspouts on everything?
Because a 3″×4″ moves roughly twice the water of the 2″×3″ that normally comes with a 5″ gutter, and it is far harder to block. A pine cone that jams a 2″×3″ elbow passes straight through.
It costs us a little more on every job. In Houston it is the difference between a gutter that drains and one that backs up in the storm it was bought for.
Do you install LeafGuard?
No — and we cannot. It is sold and fitted only through their own distributors. That is their business model, not a judgment on the product.
Their screen runs around $35 per linear foot. Ours is $15 and outperforms GutterGlove micromesh in our own installations. Worth getting both quotes.
Will guards mean I never clean them again?
No, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling. Fine debris, shingle grit and pollen still collect on top of a screen, and under pine canopy a mat forms on the mesh that has to come off.
A guard turns a quarterly job into an annual one. It does not eliminate it.
What warranty comes with it?
24 months on workmanship, covering both gutters and screens. If something we installed leaks or pulls loose in that time, we come back.
Material warranties are the manufacturer's and vary by product — we will tell you what applies to what you have chosen.
How long does it take?
Usually a single day for an average house, including removing the old system. The gutters are formed on your driveway, so there is no waiting on an order.
